It’s hard to be humble

July 31st, 2009

It’s hard to be humble. St. Benedict (480-547), called “the Father of Western Monasticism,” wrote a guide to humility that is still popular today. The guide is a chapter within Benedict’s Rule, which set forth a blueprint for the life of the monks within his monasteries. The following excerpt, taken from Steps to Humility, summarizes the ladder to humility:

Brethren, the Holy Scripture cries to us, saying: “Every one that exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.”

President Obama says “I Pray All the Time Now”

July 30th, 2009

Well, church, we sure can’t fault him for this, can we?

If he’s serious, this is good news.

We want our President to be praying just as we are commanded to pray for those in authority (see Romans 13:1).

The Bible does not specify what type of government Christians should work toward. It does, however, instruct Christians to obey the government under which they find themselves living, and to give to others what they are owed–whether it is money or respect.

The cultural disaster caused by divorce

July 30th, 2009

I just got around to reading Time Magazine’s recent cover on marriage. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the crisis facing the American culture defined as boldly and succinctly as Time’s Caitland Flanagan does with this quite from her essay:

There is no other single force causing as much measurable hardship and human misery in this country as the collapse of marriage. It hurts children, it reduces mothers’ financial security, and it has landed with particular devastation on those who can bear it least: the nation’s underclass.

The piece offers first rate reporting and writing from an acute observer of our culture.

Spiritual immaturity stymies church

July 29th, 2009

An unclear understanding of spiritual maturity may be an underlying reason why there is so little progress in seeing people develop spiritually in the United States, despite overwhelming access to churches and unlimited products and resources, The Barna Group says.

“America has a spiritual depth problem partly because the faith community does not have a robust definition of its spiritual goals,” David Kinnaman, Barna’s president, said. “The study shows the need for new types of spiritual metrics.”

Barna found that most Christians equate spiritual maturity with following the rules described in the Bible. Also, many churchgoers were unable to identify how their church defines spiritual maturity. Most Christians, Barna said, offer one-dimensional views of personal spiritual maturity, giving answers such as having a relationship with Jesus, living a moral lifestyle or applying the Bible.

Most pastors struggle with articulating a specific set of objectives for spirituality and instead list activities over attitudes, the study said. Pastors are willing to acknowledge that a lack of spiritual maturity is one of the largest problems in the nation, but few of them say spiritual immaturity is a problem in their church.

Petition asks Congress to Exclude Abortion from Health Care Bills

July 29th, 2009

In just one week, over 65,000 Americans have joined with the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) by signing a national petition demanding that safeguards be enacted to ensure that abortion is not mandated or subsidized in legislation “as important and future-shaping as healthcare reform.”

Meanwhile, the Susan B. Anthony List reported Tuesday that over 100,000 letters from pro-life activists nationwide were sent to Congress urging the exclusion of abortion from any national health care reform effort.
